What is IGERT?

The National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program, which cuts across disciplines and offer fellowships and a nurturing academic environment to carefully chosen students who intend to pursue Ph.D.s  IGERT was developed to meet the challenges of educating United States.

What is the focus and curriculum of the IGERT program  at Texas A&M University?

The TAMU IGERT is entitled, Next-generation Computations and Analytical Tools for Materials Science, and focuses on computational materials science and engineering. IGERT fellows enroll in the MSEN or Mathematics Ph.D. programs, and will satisfy requirements for these degrees while following the specific IGERT curriculum. The curriculum  contains a common core designed to establish a solid foundation of analytic and computational  skills, and an understanding of the language and concepts needed to communicate across disciplines. Students form Mathematics following this curriculum will take the two-semester core MSEN series, providing a general understanding o the important concepts, and also one topics course providing a more in-depth view of an area of current applications.
MSEN students following the common curriculum will obtain an awareness of new analytic and computation methods, as well as the limitation of those commonly employed.

What advantages are provided for the IGERT student?

The interactions between students in their common course environment, as well as through presentations  and other interactions, will further enhance the interdisciplinary learning environment. IGERT students share office space dedicated to them. In addition, IGERT students and faculty participate in an annual social gathering.

What is the amount of the stipend?

The annual stipend is $30,000 for two years, after which time IGERT students are expected  join an existing research group as a research assistant. Funds for travel to professional conferences where students present their research, is also provided.

Who can apply for an IGERT fellowship?

Due to the fact IGERT is an NSF-sponsored program, only American citizens and permanent residents are eligible to become IGERT fellow.

How can I apply to be an IGERT fellow?
